The center’s lack of interest in developing Confucian intellectual discourses was confirmed by my interviews with intellectuals who undertook studies of Confucianism. Even those scholars who study Confucianism under the guidance of Marxism denied that they or their discourses about Confucianism received preferential treatment or attention from the central government. One professor from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, who has an established reputation for undertaking Confucianism studies from the Marxist perspective, said,I do not believe that the central authorities are interested in my works on Confucianism, needless to say my proposals about putting Confucian social order into practice. I do not have much hope for this government. (Interviewee 40)
